Movement on marriage

The total of Assemblymembers in support of marriage now stands at 68, with the additions of Kenneth Zebrowski, Jr. (D-Rockland) and Phil Ramos (D-Suffolk) this week. Seventy-six are needed for a majority and we still do not know where 48 Assemblymembers stand on the issue.

Assemblymember Daniel O'Donnell, the bill's prime sponsor, is hoping to shore up co-sponsors by next Tuesday, May 15. According to Paul Schindler, EIC of Gay City News: "Between now and next Tuesday, everybody who cares about this issue should contact undecided members of the Assembly to support the Spitzer-O'Donnell measure, which is sponsored in the Senate by Chelsea's out gay Democrat Tom Duane."

Glad to see there is steady progress here. The more visible we are, the more we are willing to share our stories, the more likely it is that support for marriage equality will increase. The operative word here is "marriage", not civil unions!

I agree we all need to contact these undecided assembly people. Would it also be possible for you to give us a separate list of those in the assembly that are fighting against our interest (marriage). Let's call it the list of “shame”. I think these people also need to get calls from their constituents. Politicians need to know, we are watching them. I can also e-mail that list to all my family and friends throughout New York and ask for assistance. We are in the home stretch, we need all the help we can get!

I believe ESPA posts a list of those who are rated as "4" or "5" on the issues, indicating opposition to our agenda. Whether they are actively fighting against us is unclear, but these would be the people to persuade.
